3GE ports - in-bound port,out-bound port,"sniffer" port === looking for suggestions

A customer has the following requirements ... anyone think of  a likely solution ?

The requirements can be divided into: 1) Must have, and, 2) Nice to have.

  • Must have:
  1. 3 GE ports, an in-bound port, an out-bound port, a sniffer port.
  2. Ability to port mirror in-bound port, and output-bound port, to the sniffer-port.
  3. Ability to operate at 1 Gb/s.

  • Nice to have:
  1. Cheap price (maybe a “must have” for typical Nielsen project manager)
  2. Built in PHY’s, and other any other functionality, that would reduce the part count for the design.

The switch is only used to sniff traffic, it does not alter, or delay the users traffic.

The switch is shunted (bypassed) for the user traffic flow.

This allows the user Ethernet traffic to continue, even if power is lost to the switch.

Any switch can do this if learning is disabled so all packets "flood" to all ports.

Another option is to use a managed switch with a feature called mirroring.

Keep in mind if you mirror a 1 Gb/s ingress and a 1Gb/S egress outbound port, the mirror will have 2Gb/S bandwidth and you will not see all of the data.

The closest Broadcom has is a 4 port BCM53134M which supports both "learning disabled" and mirror modes with a 2.5Gb/S uplink to be used as the mirror.
