Objects not visible when view port shading on solid or textu


This may not actually be a Blender issue but I'm at a loss.
Blender 2.49 worked very well for me.
I'm running Ubuntu - Natty on an Aspire 2000
After upgrading to 2.5 and now 2.6 I have this issue.
Everything works as far as I can tell but I cannot see any object when the View port shading is set to solid or textured. The ground plan is not visible either. If I change the viewport shading to wireframe or bounding box everything is visible.
I tried going back to 2.49 but it didn't work at all.
Is it possibly an opengl problem ?

Any help will be apprecited.
